Russian 101: Russian Alphabet


I’m Alexander and here is promised Russian alphabet.
The first letter in each couple is capital. In example syllables and words, capital letters are used for stressed vowels.  Dashed letters make syllables. Examples without dashes are real words but now they are just for listening and reading. Stay with me and you’ll know the meanings of the words quite soon. And now I’ll read for you.

Щщ – /sh/ softer than English – -ща-, -щу-, щи

ъ    HARD SIGN, isn’t read out of words, influences other sounds

ы –  NO SOUND SYMBOL FOR THIS мы, вы, -лы-, дым, рык, рЫба

ь –   SOFT SIGN, isn’t read out of words, influences other sounds

Ээ – /e/  – Эра, Эго, мэр

Юю – /ju:/ – юр, Юра, юлА,

Яя – /ja:/ – яр, яд, Яна
